Résumé anglais
The papers in this Bulletin were produced after of a Working Group meeting held at the
University of Ljubljana, Slovenia on 3-7 October 2005. The meeting was hosted by Stanislav
Trdan and his colleagues. It was an extremely successful meeting both scientifically and
socially and all of the participants enjoyed their visit to Slovenia and appreciated the great
hospitality extended to them. I thank Stanislav and his colleagues for all they did to make the
meeting so enjoyable.
The majority of the discussion and presentations focused on the pest insects of field
vegetable crops but there were also presentations on the weeds and diseases of these crops.
Many of the presentations and papers reflect the need to consider methods of pest control
that reduce or avoid the application of synthetic pesticides. This is partly for environmental
and consumer reasons (consumers are concerned about pesticide residues in food), but mainly
because the range of effective pesticides available to vegetable growers is limited. This is, to
a great extent, because vegetables are ‘minor’ crops and do not provide a large market for
pesticide manufacturers or indeed for companies producing biological or other noninsecticidal
methods of control.
Thrips tabaci was the pest insect discussed by the largest number of participants. In most
cases, it affects crop quality rather than yield, but it is difficult to control mainly because of its
cryptic habit. There are also few effective insecticides. Several members of the group met
subsequently to discuss this pest in more detail. Members of the group also contact one
another from time to time with queries and it is a very effective network. Control
