Benefits of using legumes as forage or fodder to feed French dairy cattle Foragelegumes play a central role in bovine dairy systems in France because of their high nutritional value. ln particular, they are protein rich, which means that they can partially or entirely replace protein supplements. Legumes may be used in diverse, complementary ways: they can serveas forage in grasslands or generate different types of fodder. Milk production by dairy cows fed forage legumes is often equal to, if not greater than,that by cows fed diets that do not con tain legumes. ln this work, we discuss the dietary benefits and diverse uses (across different dietary regimes) of lu cerne, white cio ver, and red cio ver in bovine dairy systems.
