Résumé
Plastic mulched strawberry beds create sustainability problems with runoff & soil erosion when it rains. Cover cropping in furrows can help, but in organic system, these cover crops need to be carefully selected so they are easy to kill mechanically.
-Eric Brennan highlights efforts to develop & evaluate novel equipment at the USDA-ARS in Salinas California for planting cover crops of mustard & sudan grass in furrow bottoms. This equipment is helping farmers to improve the efficiency and sustainability of these systems. Data are presented on how cover crop seeding rate & planting arrangement impact cover crop biomass production & canopy development, & weeds in strawberry furrows.
-This was presented in a the at the 2017 American Society of Horticultural Science annual meeting in Waikaloa, Hawaii.
-The furrow cover cropping method described was highlighted briefly (at minute 7:54) in the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) video (Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMIFB...
